Something to think about...

"Implements that take their shape directly from their working contact with the substance they are made to deal with often express their purpose in simple and beautiful terms. In the strong hands of a blacksmith, iron is given a vitality that often transcends its use." C. Williams

Young Knifemakers

A single mother who is a friend of ours needed to leave her kids with us for a couple of days. Today I took the older boys out to the shop and we made a knife. I had them forge the distal taper and bevels, file, sand, and perform the dunk for the quench. They loved it. Another time we'll put a handle on it and maybe make a sheath.

Todd,

Great thing you are doing there, helping others out and teaching those fellows a craft. It is a craft that will likely teach them more about what is important, than any school will.

My hat's off to you Amigo!

Hey, how old are they?
I think they're the youngest knifemakers I've ever heard :-)
Any problem about safety with them?

Fabio! They're 11 and 13. I hope my own sons start even earlier! I keep a close eye on things, so they stay safe. No accidents yet. :)

Thanks, Albert! I agree. Making a knife, kids learn to work with their hands, to stick with a project until it's done, and then have something to be proud of. When do they learn that in school?
